New Year Walks

Wrap up warm and head out on foot to discover a side to the city that most people miss. A walk through the capital reveals a world of hidden gems: architectural details, ornate squares tucked behind townhouses, and quaint passages lined with boutiques. And the beauty of being on foot is that you can set your own pace – even popping into one of London’s historic pubs to soak up the cosy winter ambience.

Deliciously Healthy Juices

For a healthy new year’s habit you will want to keep, Mayfair is home to a host of juice bars serving up tasty, vitamin-filled goodness. Daily Dose on Berkeley Street is proudly organic and rescues wonky fruit and veg to create some of the capital’s most delicious drinks, as well as offering a range of vegan treats. Round the corner, Crussh on Curzon Street will whizz up fresh juice fruit right before your eyes, or blend your choice of hearty smoothie with yoghurt or milk.

Cycle the Parks

Bathed in winter sun or dusted with frost, the Royal Parks glow at this time of year. From the rolling meadows of Kensington Gardens to the manicured hedgerows of Regents Park, a cycle across the vast expanse of parkland in London is the perfect way to see them – and to kick-start a re-energised new year. Grab a pay-as-you-go Santander Cycle, or rent from Rapha Cycle Club in Soho for the full London experience.

1_Horse ride amongst Autumn leaves-2

London on Horseback

Horse riding has been at the heart of London life ever since Henry VIII established Hyde Park as his personal hunting ground in 1536. Step into that tradition with a horseback ride offered by Ross Nye Stables, the capital’s longest-established riding school to offer riding in central London. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the Queen’s own horses, which are exercised early every morning along Rotten Row.

A Musical Comedy

Until 30 March
Company, Gielgud Theatre

Hilarity and heartbreak come together in Marianne Elliott’s sensational reinvention of the legendary Stephen Sondheim musical. The seventies at a time of sexual revolution is swapped for the modern-day city, and leading man Bobby has become Bobbie, a perennially single woman about to celebrate her 35th birthday. For first-timers and fans of the original alike, this West End production will set your pulse racing – and your feet tapping.

2 February-14 July
Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams, V&A

Spectacular and sumptuous, this exhibition reveals how the French fashion designer threw out wartime austerity and created a fabulous new look for women. His pinched waists and full skirts transformed European design, and this exhibition – the largest and most comprehensive on Dior in UK history – features the iconic dress worn by Princess Margaret for her 21st birthday portraits.

27 March-11 August
Van Gogh and Britain, Tate Britain

Artistic inspiration and London go hand in hand. Take Vincent van Gogh, who lived here for several crucial years as a young man. He fell in love with the people and the culture he encountered, and the city made an impression on him that would shape his imagination and his painting forever. Head to Tate Britain to see for yourself the influence the city had on Van Gogh, and how he, in turn, inspired generations of British artists.

Best Supper

In Spain, sabor means “flavour”. In Mayfair, it means exactly the same thing, as chef Nieves Barragan Mohacho and front-of-house maestro José Etura’s new restaurant on Heddon Street serves up a taste of Iberia that has already earned the pair a coveted Michelin star. Head upstairs for specialities from the Galicia and Castile regions of Spain, cooked in their traditional wood-fired oven.

Best Brunch / Lunch

Forget gruelling diets and strict food fads; for healthy dining that is as delicious as is it nourishing, look no further than Notting Hill’s Farmacy. Inspired by dishes from around the globe and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Farmacy serves up a mouthwatering menu that is free from dairy, refined sugars, additives and chemicals, so you can indulge your inner foodie without the guilt..
